Congratulations on completing your orthodontic treatment! Wearing your retainer is the final step to keeping your smile looking its best.
Wearing Your Retainer
During the first four to six months after your braces are removed, you should wear your retainer every night and for most of the day. After that initial period, nightly wear is recommended to maintain your alignment long-term.
Dr. Stafford will review your personalized instructions at your follow-up appointments.
Retainer Instructions
- Use a toothbrush with water after each wear to gently clean your retainer. Regular cleaning prevents buildup and keeps your retainer fresh.
- Always remove your retainer before eating or drinking anything other than water. Whenever your retainer is out of your mouth, store it in its protective case.
- Please do not chew on your retainer or flip it in and out of your mouth with your tongue. These habits can damage or warp the retainer, reducing its effectiveness.
- If your retainer feels tight, it is usually a sign that you need to wear it more frequently. Do not stop wearing it completely, as this can allow your teeth to shift. Please call our office for advice.
- As advised by Dr. Stafford, retainer checks are an important part of maintaining your alignment. These visits allow us to assess fit and make any necessary adjustments to keep your smile on track.
- If you lose or damage your retainer, please call our office right away. Going too long without wearing your retainer can cause your teeth to shift back out of alignment. The sooner we hear from you, the sooner we can get you fitted with a replacement.
